You certainly can’t start your trip without visiting the city’s beautiful beach: Poetto!

The 8 km of coastline that will greet you when you land on Elmas is a beach that stretches from the Sella del Diavolo promontory and Marina Piccola to the Quartu Sant’Elena coastline: this is known as the ‘Poetto’ beach.

This beach is a small paradise just a few steps away from the city, an irresistible attraction for long walks, an ideal place to practice sports or have fun with its intense nightlife among clubs, bars and discos that you will find close to the sand: the beach “Al Poetto” is the theatre of the summer movida.

Regattas and spectacular events also take place here.

You will also find a modern promenade, with horse riding, rollerblading, skating, skateboarding, quad biking, sup, canoeing, sailing, kite surfing, jogging, biking and beach volleyball.

The water is clear and the seabed is sandy and shallow for tens of metres, ideal for families and children. There are toilets and showers available and areas reserved for dogs.

Food in Cagliari

La Pizzetta Sfoglia

Every city has its own characteristic pizza, in Cagliari, the pizzetta sfoglia! Of all the delicious things you can enjoy, this is the one to start with. Did you know that when a Cagliari expatriate, wherever he goes, he can find almost anything, except for one thing: pizzetta sfoglia! It is the pizza par excellence of the Cagliari people, the one that can be eaten for breakfast, a snack, or as an aperitif; the one that can be found and bought really everywhere in Cagliari: in bars, supermarkets, bakeries… two layers of puff pastry that wrap a fresh tomato sauce and, if you like, a caper or anchovy paste. Finished. In these four ingredients lies the secret of the snack of an entire people. In short, a real delicacy that we recommend you try as soon as you arrive in Cagliari.

Sa Burrida

Let’s start with the starters: Sa Burrida is a typical dish from Cagliari that features the gattuccio di mare, a fish that cunning housewives in Cagliari have cleaned directly at the market (this hints at the difficulty with which this fish is handled). The gattuccio, or catfish, is an animal resembling a small shark, typical of Sardinian waters. This dish is generally stewed with vinegar and tomato sauce or with sweet and sour sauce accompanied by walnuts and parsley. The origins of this appetiser are poor. Today, however, it is a delicacy offered in many luxurious and refined restaurants. There are many variations for the preparation of the dish, many of them based on specific recipes known but mostly kept by local fishermen.

Pasta with clams and roe

A perfect combination of the delicacy of the sea and the intensity of mullet roe, a treasure of local gastronomy. This dish represents one of the excellences of Cagliari cuisine, where the simplicity of the ingredients meets a refined and decisive taste. The pasta, usually spaghetti or linguine, is enveloped by the delicate flavour of the clams and enriched with bottarga, a typical Sardinian product obtained from processing and seasoning mullet eggs. A real must for those who want to savour the essence of the sea in a traditional and irresistible dish.

Sa fregula cun cocciula

We continue with the first course par excellence: do you want to taste the sea? Then you should ask for the fregola con le vongole. It is cooked in a pan with olive oil, garlic and parsley. What is ‘sa fregula’? Fregula is a very typical and traditional dried pasta made from wheat semolina, water and salt. It is prepared by hand by the most demanding housewives or with industrial dies. It comes in various sizes and is made by ‘rolling’ the semolina in a large earthenware bowl and toasting it in the oven. Its shape is reminiscent of couscous with large, round grains, and it is also close to this in terms of preparation and taste, as well as roasting.

Malloreddus

Another simple but delicious first course is the very famous Sardinian gnocchetti: Malloreddus. Malloreddus are a semolina pasta with a ridged shell shape, usually flavoured with saffron or vegetables. The original Cagliari recipe is Campidanese style: with sausage ragout, tomato sauce, onion and grated Sardinian pecorino cheese to decorate.
